Krispy Kreme Doughnuts with Cheerwine-infused creme

Being from Lexington, NC, which sits squarely in the middle of Winston-Salem, NC (home of Krispy Kreme doughnuts) and Salisbury, NC (home of Cheerwine, which is a cherry flavored soft drink), I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Krispy Kreme and Cheerwine.  But I never would have put these two together.  So when I heard that KK was coming out with a Cheerwine-infused creme, I knew I had to beat everyone else down at the KK counter to get my fill.  The doughnuts came out on July 1 and are only available in North Carolina grocery stores.  So on Thursday and Friday, a friend and I traipsed around Charlotte and, when unsuccessful, called even more places around Charlotte only to discover that the locations either did not have them or were sold out.  One grocery store clerk told me that I'd have a hard time finding the doughnuts because he'd been asked by over 150 people 'where are the doughnuts' and that they would sell out quickly.  So I firmly told him that I'd beat down anyone in my way.  I laughed so he would think that I was being light-hearted and joking.  But I wasn't.

 I. don't. joke. about Krispy Kreme Doughnuts with Cheerwine-infused creme.

I found a box of 6 on Saturday at the Taj-maTeeter in Charlotte.  So excited!!  Couldn't wait to get home!!  I was dancing in the aisles of the grocery store! Michael was taking pictures of the darling little box in the cart while standing in the deli section!  We just couldn't wait! I peeked into the box and saw that these little bundles of goodies were frosted in chocolate and covered in red and white sprinkles.

As soon as we got home I tore into the box.  Picture me, with arms flailing, trying to remove the tape that is holding the box shut tight.  Finally, with one deft swoop, I tear open the box and put my nose down into the doughnuts and breath deeply.  MmmmmmHmmmmm.  Heaven.  I pick one up, smile at Michael, and take a bite.  Different.  I could do without the sprinkles, but I've never been attracted to sprinkles, so I discount this.  The creme is a very pretty pink with a nice cherry flavor.  It is also super sweet.  I think KK put the chocolate icing on the doughnuts to counter balance the sweetness.  Still, I think the sweetness overpowers the chocolate.  Sadly, today's Monday, and there are 5 (yes 5) still sitting in the box.  That should tell you something.  No?  Well, this little tidbit will.

When I was still in public accounting, KK was a client of mine.  At their corporate office, there is a KK doughnut case (a big one) wherein the local KK store drops by FRESHLY made doughnuts of every kind each morning.  Have you ever had a freshly-made Krispy Kreme doughnut?  Ahhhh....there is nothing like it - they melt in your mouth.  And I adore the glazed, creme-filled ones.  OMG  Anyway, back to my tidbit.  On one occassion (over a 6 or 7 hour period so it's really not that bad), I ate eight doughnuts!!!!!!!!!  Let me break this down for you:  2 for breakfast, 2 for a late morning snack, 2 for an afternoon snack after lunch, and 2 for the drive home.  All glazed, creme-filled.  Now really, that doesn't sound so bad, does it???  No. I didn't think so.  But, yes.....

I can put away some Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

So, with a broken heart, this tells you how I feel about the Krispy Kreme Doughnuts with Cheerwine-infused creme.  Snif, snif.
