Pics from the past week

I've promised a couple of times to share a bunch of pics from the past week...so here they are!  Prepare for your tastebuds to be jealous.  This was one of the most interesting trips, food wise, that I've been on in a long time.  I hope you find these pictures interesting as well!

One more thing...I should mention that Michael and I met one of our good friends at Jake's Good Eats for dinner on Friday night.  It is in north Charlotte and has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.  It really lived up to its name! (Also, Michael apologizes for the size of this post.  He's going to work on figuring out how to do a photo gallery in future posts.)

Cheese curds at 5-8 Club. Squeaky goodness!

The 5-8 Club JUICY LUCY. Notice the spelling. We'll get to the real JUCY LUCY in a few minutes...Sign outside the 5-8 Club. The inside was not as seedy as the outside.View on the street outside Zelo. The weather was fantastic!Butternut squash ravioli at Zelo. Very tasty!Budino molten chocolate lava cake. I'm not going to post the pic of how much I ate for fear of incriminating myself!Frisee and rocket salad mentioned in my post on June 23rd. Dish 2 of 5 at Bar LaGrassaSpaghetti carbonara with house cured pancetta. 3 of 5 at Bar LaGrassaBruschetta with eggplant and prosciutto. 4 of 5 at Bar LaGrassaTruffle cream cheese wontons wth a malt vinegar dipping sauce. This was the best part of the meal at Mission American Kitchen.Unlike Adam from Man v Food, I'm not afraid to pick a winner in the battle for Jucy Lucy supremacy. This JUCY LUCY from Matt's Bar is it.The side of Matt's Bar. The menu at Matt's. It's Matt's way or the highway here! The sign outside Matt's. Such a hole in the wall place. I LOVE IT!Fried green tomatoes at Jake's Good Eats in Charlotte. This place was on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and definitely lived up to its name.Michael's "All the Way" burger at Jake's. He had to use a fork because it was so messy! My fried bologna sandwich at Jake's. So good!We met our good friend Adam at Jake's for dinner. He ordered the pork chop, and it looked fantastic. He said it was really good.

Mission American Kitchen & Bar

Well, last night I had to work a little late so I didn't get to go out and play like Jenn did.  She went to a kitschy place for dinner and played '80s music bingo.  I could have killed that game!  I left the office under review a little past eight and wandered back to the hotel around 8.30 pm.  The weather is so nice here that it just amazes when I hear locals complaining about the heat and mugginess.  (Apparently, 82 degrees farenheit is the hottest it will be here all year.  This fair city is having a heat wave! I think it feels so good here that I could just lay down on the sidewalk and roll around over and over again - wouldn't that be something to see?  But of course, I never would - I don't want to get my Ann Taylor suit dirty.)

Anyway, I walked into the hotel room and picked up the phone to order room service and I stopped myself.  Why order room service? It will be over-priced and have no flavor, and when just outside the hotel door is a restaurant that has such smells coming from it that it makes my tummy growl?  So I took off my suit jacket, grabbed a magazine, and headed back downstairs.  The restaurant was pretty crowded but I was given a bar table near a window so that I could read.  I ordered an appetizer of truffle cream cheese wontons with a malt vinegar dipping sauce and an entree of a beef tenderloin with roasted garlic potato puree and bacon braised broccolini.  Well, the entree was so forgettable that I'm not even going to waste my time writing about it and your time reading about it other than to say that it was lukewarm and not flavorful at ALL.

But the wontons...O.M.G.  Can I just say this again (but with more emphasis this time)? Truffle cream cheese wontons with a malt vinegar dipping sauce.  I nearly swooned as I bit into my first one.  (I think there were a total of eight wontons and yes, I ate every last one of them).  O.M.G. - I can't say it enough!!  These little things, about 2 bites each, were incredible, delectable, and again, made me want to swoon.  Actually, as I think back on the moment of my first bite, I think I did swoon a little bit.  You know when you take a bite and you just kind of do a dip-down and dip-forward with your body so that you can let out a good "Mmmmmmm"?  Well, that was me.  The cream cheese was soft and warm from being fried in the pastry.  The truffle oil, I can only assume, was mixed in with the cream cheese because there was just an ever-so-slight essence of truffle.  And the dipping sauce, "Mmmmmmmm".  At first taste, you get a tang from the malt vinegar and then as it lingers on your tongue, you get the honey and its sweetness.  It was one of the most delicious things I've tasted!! I wish I had sent back the entree that I've sworn not to discuss and ordered a second round of the wontons.  I will miss them when I leave Minneapolis; my little pockets of joy!!  (As I found out later last night when I was back in the hotel room, the back of my magazine was very sticky, so I must have sat my magazine down in the little dripples of sauce that fell while I was eating - I guess I can always lick the back)

Due to my late night (I didn't get back to the hotel til around 10pm), there was no yoga for me.  Just a hot shower and bed.

Pics this weekend.  I promise.
